Submitting your work to Agents/Publishers

If you have already found a publisher for your first book, but it has not yet been released, is it okay to seek a different agent/publisher for a second book that is in progress or finished at the same time? And if so, how will the negotiation with the second book be impacted by the fact that another publisher is printing the first book?

I have been asked to write this article based on material I have posted in forum, those who have read the forum will notice the ‘cut ‘n paste’ bits, but I hope that I have added enough useful bits to make it interesting.

Well here we are:

It is the 5th of December and I am in the last four weeks of the writing/cutting/polishing process. I have made a tentative query to a reputable and successful London agent and she responded by email impressively quickly.

I have kept the whole email discussion formal.

Now all there is left to do is wait hoping that I receive a request for the full MS.

I have given her an overview of the size of the project without sliding in to naming other books and Authors by means of comparison.

7 Reasons Agents Stop Reading Your First Chapter

I recently attended the Writer Idol Event at Boston Book Fest. It was not for the faint of heart, but for those willing to brave public ridicule, it was a great way to get helpful feedback.

Well today I found about a hundred different ways to describe my manuscript to people I know won't read it. Literary Agents and Publishers are like beautiful women to ugly blokes. They bat an eye lid and pout a little and the blokes open up their wallets like its the Xmas sale at Harrods. And where does it get you? A lot of broken promises and membership to the post office frequent postage program. Disappointment? Sure. Because like with the beautiful girl you know you don't have much of a chance.
