I made sure that no research sources were harmed in the making of my first book. The humor genre has no actual formula and comes with no rulebook. I could sit in my underwear and write down random thoughts that roughly fit into a random theme. That’s what attracted me to it in the first place. I figured that since my short-term memory … I forget what I was going to say.

The first time I ever remember anyone asking me what I wanted to be when I grew up was in Mrs. O'Shea's first grade classroom. We were all sitting on the carpet in front of her as she asked each one of us what our plans were for the future. It was a question a person will hear a thousand more times in their life (some of us into adulthood, but that is a different story). It was a question that when a teacher asked it, and we all had to have an answer. When was my turn to answer the question, I immediately answered, "A Technician, like my mom."

The first step in becoming a good writer is exposing yourself to as much good writing as you can get your hands on. This means reading as much as you can. Make more time to read at home, but also think about other ways you can get more pages in. If you have a long commute, consider listening to audio books instead of music. Carry a paperback or an ebook reader with you for those long waits in the checkout line or the doctor’s office.
