Clare became an agent in 1998 after more than 20 years as a publisher.
From 1990-1997 she was publishing director of Viking where she edited Pat Barker, Helen Dunmore, Alex Garland, Donna Tartt and William Trevor, amongst others. She was then Editor-in-Chief at Macmillan, which incorporated the Macmillan, Pan and Picador imprints.

Clare was nominated as Orion Publishing Group Literary Agent of the Year at the 2007 British Book Industry Awards.
She is a member of the Women's Committee of the Orange Prize.
She is currently president of the Association of Author's Agents.
